Between 2019 and 2020 the Public Service workforce (FTEs) increased by 4,521 or 8.6%. This was driven mainly by increased funding for front-line and information-support roles (e.g. Ministry of Social Development, Oranga Tamariki and Immigration NZ), with some of this Covid related.

Amongst the occupation groups, ‘Information Professionals’ (up 987 or 15.2%), ‘Inspectors and Regulatory Officers’ (up 767 or 7.3%), and ‘Social, Health and Education Workers’ (up 734 or 7.8%) had the largest increases.
