These guidelines are for everyone undertaking a government board appointment process. They are designed to assist departments, other State Services agencies, Ministers and their offices with making effective appointments to the boards of a wide range of agencies and bodies.

In November 2013 the guidelines were revised for consistency with the 2013 amendments to State sector legislation. Further minor changes were made in August 2014 to reflect Productivity Commission feedback on clarifying that board members should not act as the representative of any external group.
