We are now seeking applications for the following position: Te Tumu Whakahaere | Chief Executive Ministry for Ethnic Communities

Aotearoa New Zealand is an ethnically diverse country and the diversity of our communities is projected to grow. New Zealand’s ethnic diversity brings new perspectives, skills and richness of culture to our society.

Some members of ethnic communities face particular challenges and barriers and are unable to access the same opportunities as others. The events of 15 March 2019 reinforced the importance of creating a society that is inclusive, embraces diversity and in which ethnic communities feel safe, valued and heard. The Government is committed to working in partnership with communities to strengthen social cohesion and ensure that New Zealand is fair and safe for all.

The Ministry for Ethnic Communities (the Ministry) is being established to advance these priorities and inform effective responses by government to the needs and aspirations of ethnic communities – including particular faiths, recognising that faith is often intertwined with ethnicity – in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Ministry will act as the Government’s principal advisor on improving outcomes and promoting the social, economic and cultural wellbeing of New Zealand’s ethnic communities.

The Chief Executive will lead the Ministry to build strong and trusting relationships with ethnic communities and their leaders across Aotearoa New Zealand. They will lead efforts to shape Government policies and service delivery to meet the needs of our ethnically diverse communities and ensure equity of opportunity and outcomes. The functions and responsibilities of the Ministry and Chief Executive may expand as the Ministry evolves to achieve the Government’s priorities.

This is an opportunity for a senior leader with strong credibility with ethnic communities to establish an important new Ministry in the Public Service. We are looking for someone with system leadership experience who can deliver within Government and Public Service agency contexts, applying their proven leadership capability.
