I’d like to thank the tens of thousands of public servants whose efforts this year have made a positive difference to the lives of so many New Zealanders.
I’m proud of the work public servants do for the people of New Zealand. Public servants protect our environment, borders, heritage and they defend our country. They run our schools and hospitals and help keep our communities safe. And they do this because they genuinely want to make a difference. For everyone.
The nature of the Public Service – making sure New Zealanders get the help they need, when they need it – means this work never really stops. Even over Christmas.
It's important to acknowledge this. At a time when many of us are relaxing with loved ones at the beach or around the barbecue, thousands of people are rostered on to provide essential public services that help keep our country ticking over.
My thanks to them all. I hope everyone finds time to rest and recharge their batteries after such a busy year.
For most people, Christmas is a special time of year. Whatever it means to you, can I wish you and your family a restful, relaxing and joyful break.
I’m looking forward to working with you all on the opportunities next year brings.
