Liam Cain is a young leader working with the Ministry of Social Development. As Acting Manager Client Service Delivery, Liam oversees the delivery of front line services for Linwood clients.
What does service to the community mean to you?
Service to the community to me, is my opportunity to have a hand in my communities’ growth. Dedicating my time and focus to leading a team that supports the community I grew up in gives me great joy and fills my cup. I love having the opportunity to be a part of seeing someone’s life change towards a better outcome and knowing the impact it can have on their whānau.
How does your work make a difference?
We support people in some of the most vulnerable times of their lives, whether that is supporting someone into sustainable employment, helping secure safe housing, or ensuring financial stability for older New Zealanders.
What achievements are you most proud of?
For me, it’s the little successes that often go unacknowledged. Spending months supporting someone you can see potential in finally getting into employment or study is what I’m most proud of.
What is your favourite part of the job?
The people. I enjoy engaging with those we support to learn about what’s important for them, navigating tough conversations while maintaining dignity and respect. I also really enjoy seeing my staff’s capability develop knowing the more great staff we have the more people we can support in the community.
What three words would you use to describe your work?
People, opportunity and purpose.
What advice would you give someone starting their career in the Public Service?
You need to be in public service for the right reasons. If you genuinely want to do your bit to support the public – give it a go. Being in public service is a privileged position to shape our community for the better, there are plenty of opportunities within public service for those willing to put the effort in.
