The Public Service Commission today released the Official Information Act statistics for the 6 months to December 2025.

The latest statistics cover 102 agencies that collectively completed 43,183 official information requests between July and December 2025. 

This is an increase of 4,466 requests from the previous period and the highest volume since reporting began in 2016.

The Public Service Commission collects and publishes data on a range of measures, including the average time for agencies to respond to requests, and the use of extensions, transfers, and refusals.

Overall, agencies responded on time to 42,230 requests, or 97.8%. This is consistent with the previous period.

The average time to respond to requests across public service departments and Crown entities was 13.1 working days.

A total of 2,528 requests (5.9%) were extended, and 1,175 requests (2.7%) were transferred to other agencies. A total of 3,835 requests (8.9%) were refused in full, most commonly because the information did not exist or would soon be publicly available.

There were 316 Ombudsman complaints notified to agencies, representing 0.7% of all completed requests. A total of 36 final opinions were made against agencies, representing less than 0.1% of all completed requests.
