Public Service Commissioner Sir Brian Roche today says the finalised collective agreement for secondary principals achieves a fair increase in pay as well as deserved recognition for the important leadership role they play in our schools.

“After a short but focused period of bargaining, I’m pleased that the Secondary Principals Association of New Zealand, the Post Primary Teachers Association and Ministry of Education could find common ground,” said Sir Brian.

“The fact the offer was overwhelmingly accepted by principals in both unions shows what can be achieved through focused, good faith bargaining. I encourage other education unions to take a similar approach, in the best interests of their members.”

The new collective agreement which covers around 330 secondary principals includes base salary increases of 2.5% on ratification and 2.1% within 12 months (a cumulative increase of 4.7% over the term of the collective), a new allowance that recognises principals’ work to lead changes to NCEA and recognition for those who contribute to new programmes to support aspiring and beginning principals.

“This offer balances fiscal responsibility with meaningful improvements to principals’ pay and conditions. It reflects shared priorities and a continued commitment to strengthening the teaching profession.

"I would like to thank SPANZ and PPTA’s constructive approach to negotiations, which has enabled this settlement,” Sir Brian said.
