Public Service Commissioner Sir Brian Roche today says the finalised pay deal for secondary teachers achieves a fair increase in pay and deserved recognition for the work they do every day.
“As I have said from the start, this round of collective bargaining was never going to be easy. However, I’m pleased that the parties have found a way through after a lot of hard work and discussion,” Sir Brian said.
“I want to acknowledge Dr Andrew Dallas, Chief of the Employment Relations Authority who facilitated bargaining between us and the PPTA last month, as well as the efforts of the bargaining teams on both sides of the table.”
The settlement includes a cumulative pay increase of 4.7% within 12 months (2.5% in Year 1 and 2.1% at the beginning of Year 2) for teachers on the top two steps of the base salary scale. In addition, teachers who are growing in their career and moving up the scale will continue to receive annual step increases along with a 4.6% pay increase within 12 months.
The settlement means that 80% of trained secondary teachers will have a base salary of more than $100k from 28 Jan 2026.
“Most of all I want to acknowledge the hard-working secondary teachers for the work they do every day. Having reached agreement, we can now action the pay increases from the start of the school year, which I’m sure will be welcome.
“This agreement shows what can be achieved through focused, good faith bargaining. I encourage other education unions to take a similar approach, in the best interests of their members,” said Sir Brian.
