Public Service Commissioner Sir Brian Roche has welcomed the successful conclusion of negotiations to renew the Primary Principals’ Collective Agreement.
On 24 February, members of NZEI Te Riu Roa voted to ratify the agreement, which covers around 1,300 primary principals.
“This settlement provides meaningful improvements to the pay and conditions of primary principals,” said Sir Brian.
“It reflects our shared priorities and a clear commitment to leading the implementation of the new curriculum while supporting better outcomes for learners.”
The term of the settlement runs from 24 February 2026 to 23 August 2028. Under the agreement, primary principals will receive a cumulative 2.5% immediately plus 2.1% in 12 months. To recognise the significant work involved in leading curriculum implementation, a $15,000 Curriculum Change Allowance will be paid over the term of the agreement. The Leadership in Literacy and Numeracy base payment will also increase to $10,000 per year, phased in over the term.
“I want to thank NZEI for engaging constructively throughout these negotiations, and the Ministry of Education’s bargaining team for their steady work in reaching this outcome,” said Sir Brian.
“This settlement is a positive result for principals and provides stability for the sector as it focuses on the important work ahead.”
