Public Service Commissioner Sir Brian Roche has concluded pay negotiations with the Primary Principals’ Collective Bargaining Union (PPCBU), following a vote by members to ratify a renewed collective agreement.
The agreement provides an immediate 2.5% pay increase for principals who are PPCBU members, and another 2.1% increase next October. As the second increase builds on the first, this will result in a 4.7% pay rise within 12 months. The settlement also includes a $2,000 increase to the ‘Leading in literacy and numeracy’ payment, recognising the role principals play in curriculum leadership.
Principals will receive $5,000 per annum for mentoring in the ‘aspiring and beginning principal pathway programme’, and have access to $12,000 for professional learning and development opportunities.
Sir Brian acknowledged the constructive approach taken by the PPCBU throughout the bargaining process.
“Principals play a vital role in delivering education priorities and managing complex school environments,” said Sir Brian.
“I value the leadership they provide in their schools and communities.
“This agreement shows what can be achieved through focused, good faith bargaining. The union’s representatives came to the table with a clear understanding of what mattered most to their members, and a willingness to make considered trade-offs. I encourage other education unions to take a similar approach, in the best interests of their members.”
