Carolina Clarke-Pailate, the 2023 Ria McBride Public Service Award recipient, used the award to become a registered nurse. Here she reflects on her achievements.
The Ria McBride Public Service Award aims to help women currently working in the Public Service to progress their career aspirations through tertiary academic study.
The spirit of the award is to support women who demonstrate personal fortitude and leadership potential, and who generally haven’t had the opportunity or means to pursue or complete tertiary study.
Carolina Clarke-Pailate from the Department of Corrections was the 2023 recipient and used the award to become a registered nurse.
“I am truly grateful for this award. At the time of receiving the award, I was in my second year of nursing studies so I am thrilled that I have officially embarked on my journey as a registered nurse at Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison.
"This milestone represents the culmination of hard work, determination and unwavering support I have received from whānau, friends, colleagues and mentors along the way.

The award honours the extraordinary legacy of Ria McBride, the first woman appointed Chief Clerk of the Public Service Commission, overcoming prejudice and obstacles as a woman in a then male domain. She pursued equal employment opportunities for women throughout her Public Service career and into her retirement.
